Mister Pip

Mister Pip - Lloyd Jones A great book about life on an unnamed island and the native inhabitants. There is unrest, as fighting between two groups threatens the people of the island. They are forgotten by the world and are left to their own devices. The story centers around a girl named Matilda and a surprising teacher named Mr. Watts. He introduces the children to Mr. Dickens and Great Expectations. Here they find an escape from the fear of living in the shadow of violence. A great story has the power to transform one from daily life as well as incorporate itself into our lives.
